Tom Smith by Eric Blenkinsop

Tom Smith

Born and bred in Mansfield, Tom joined the Military as an apprentice tradesman in 1944 at the Army Technical Training School in Chepstow. He joined 9 Sqn in the Canal Zone and very promptly settled in and became a Cpl in 3 Troop.

Tom was an outstanding hockey player and was instrumental in keeping his new Troop Commander Capt Dennis Eagan out of the Sqn hockey team. This was quite remarkable given that Capt Eagan was a hockey Olympian having won a bronze medal at the Helsinki games.

Tom left the Army after 8 years and then became a prison officer serving at HMP Maidstone in the early years.

Sadly, he passed away on 22nd June 2018. He leaves his wife Joy after 67 years of happy marriage and 4 years courting and their Family.

RIP, Blenk.
