Herbert Samuel (aka Mick) Asher

Former WOI (RSM) Mick Asher passed away on 5 November 2011.

Having initially joined the Highland Light Infantry in 1943 and after completing his basic training, Mick transferred to the Royal Engineers where he served for almost 25 years. He volunteered for parachute training and having completed the course went on to serve with 1st Para Sqn and 9 AB Sqn RE respectively. Active service took him to Norway towards the end of WWII and a couple of years later to Palestine where he served a total of 3 years.

He was later to see further active service in Korea serving with a non airborne unit. Postings to the more exotic locations of Hong Kong, Bahrain and Germany were to follow.

On promotion to WOI he posted to the TA Regiments in Nottingham & Smethwick, this was followed by his appointment as RSM in 22 Engineer Regiment, Tidworth.

Mick retired from military service in 1968 and set up a dress fabric business in Nottinghamshire which he ran for 20 years. Still not content to sit back on his laurels he then served as a member of the Corps of Commissionaires.

Despite multiple organ failure in November 2010 which Mick survived after specialist treatment, he was able to enjoy a good quality of life for a further year until suffering heart failure.

He leaves a widow Doreen, 3 daughters, Sally, Irene and Rosemary and 2 grandchildren Grace and Sean.
