Charles Robert Haskins - Died: 25th December 2002

Charles was born on the 12th July 1920 and subsequently enlisted into the Army in 1938. He joined the Royal Engineers and served in many Engineer Regiments and Squadrons.

During his Service, Charles served in India, Afghanistan, The Khyber Pass and the North West Frontier. He spent the last 2 years of his Service life in India, where he served with the 33 Indian Corps, IV Indian Corps, 33 Parachute Squadron RE, 50 Indian Parachute Brigade and 44 Indian Airborne Division. Charles served overseas for nearly 6 years.

He was subsequently discharged from the Army in 1956. His decorations include the 1939-45 Star, The Burma Star, The Defence Medal, The 1939-45 War Medal and The Coronation Medal 1953.

Charles was also a very keen sportsman, playing football and hockey to a good standard. However, it was as a boxer that Charles really excelled. Fighting at the 9 stone weight (Featherweight), he had 40 fights of which he lost just 2. I think you will agree this was a remarkable record.

After his Discharge, Charles worked as an Engineering Maintenance Fitter at Alcan Industries, Rogerstone, Gwent for 34 years.
He was a member of The Royal British Legion, The Burma Star Association, The Royal Engineers Airborne Association and The Parachute Regiment and Airborne Forces Association.
