Roll of Honour

Col George Harris died in his sleep at his home in Chatham, Kent on Thursday 28th October 1999. His funeral was held in the Royal Engineers Garrison Church in Brompton on Friday 5th November, and was attended by his four sons and family. Three of his sons are former Army Officers, and his second son served for 22 years in the French Foreign Legion (Para) retiring as an Adjutant-Chef e.g. RSM.

Colonel O'Callaghan MBE, MC read the eulogy. The service was well attended by his former military colleagues and friends in his civilian life. Two former members of the 4th Para Sqn RE were in attendance, Maj Harry Faulkner-Brown OBE, MC, who was 3 troop commander, and Eric Richards also of 3 troop. During the battle for Arnhem, George was wounded and taken POW.

On leaving the service Col Harris was for many years 'Controller' of the RE Association at Brompton barracks. He was also Master of the Chatham Beagles.

Following the church service there was a private cremation attended by his close family.

Refreshments were provided in the HQ RE Officers Mess in Brompton barracks, where the Commandant of the RSME called in to pay his respects.
