Tony Jones

Tony was one of the early reinforcements to join The 1st Parachute Squadron in North Africa in early 1943 and he fought with the Squadron in North Africa, Sicily and Italy before whole of the 1st Airborne Division returned to England later that year to prepare for operations subsequent to D-Day. His last parachute operation was in September 1944 when he was part of the gallant force that battled for the bridge at Arnhem. Tony was seriously wounded and captured. He owed his life to the skill of the German surgeon who operated on him and who saw that he was evacuated to a suitable hospital where he was cared for until he was repatriated in May 1945.

Always a keen supporter of Squadron reunions, he attended every one for over sixty years despite increasing ill-health. Tony died on 12th October 2013 at the age of 94, having suffered a major stroke. Sadly, his sister, Everil Dobbie, (widow of another Squadron stalwart) only survived him by four days. They will both be sadly missed.
