Mick Melia
![]() |
Mick was killed in action at Goose Green on 28th May 1982, and fought alongside A Company, 2nd Battalion, Parachute Regiment to retake Darwin Hill. Initially Mick was buried at Ajax Bay on 30 May 1982. Following a funeral with full military honours, he was reinterred at the Weston Park Cemetery, Plymouth. Prior to joining the army as a regular soldier, Mick had been a member of the Territorial Army, serving in 75 Engineer Regiment (202 Field Squadron (V) TAVR). You can find more information on Mick via the following link: |
The following was published in the Airborne Engineers Association Journal, issue number 22, dated August 2007
Mick Melia served as a section commander in 2 Troop, 9 Para Sqn from 1980 to 1982. Mick left Aidershot in early 1982 to return to 59 Commando in Plymouth. Mick deployed on Op Corporate (Falklands Conflict) with recce troop 59 and was killed in action during the battle for Goose Green on 28th May 1982. At the end of the campaign Mick’s name was not included on the Airborne Forces memorial in Aidershot Military Cemetery. It seemed to many people that this was an injustice as he was an airborne soldier and had died while supporting 2 Para. Happily we can now report that thanks to the efforts of Freddie Kemp and WOI (GSM) John Ferry, Mick’s name is now on the memorial. The association was happy to pay for the work to be carried out.
They shall grow not old
as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them
nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
We will remember them
