Roll of Honour
Norman Sangwin
By Tony Mossop, Vice Chairman, 299 Association (Hull)
It's with a heavy heart, that the branch has to announce the sad passing of one of its original members, Norman Sangwin, who passed away on the 6th October 2010. Norman joined the Army in 1947 as an original member of 299 Airborne Engineers; serving for over ten years, with tours in Malta, Malaysia and Italy and was an active member of the Hull branch. In 2006 as the oldest member of 299, he was ecstatic to be asked too raise the standard, when 299 (131 Commando) reverted back to a Parachute Squadron. During his civil career, Norman became a martial arts expert and achieved the status as the: head of a world wide association, attaining the distinctive rank of 10th Dan. On his 80th birthday in 2007, Norman was made a fellow of the Martial Arts Commission and presented with the prestigious award, rank, of 11th Dan. |
Norman leaves two daughters Kathleen & Angela along with two sons Colin and Richard. Both of his sons have carried on the family tradition of serving with the Royal Engineers Colin with 299 and 9 Indep Para Sqn, Richard with 299.
All his friends within the association and the airborne fraternity will sadly miss Norman.
