Roll of Honour
Peter Wood (passed away in August 2017)
Peter was born in Grimsby and raised in Woolwich where his father was an MOD police officer at Woolwich Arsenal having served as a regular soldier.
In 1943 Peter enlisted as an apprentice tradesman at Chepstow to be trained as a Vehicle Mechanic. His main sport was rugby where he played in the A Coy rugby team as a prop forward. After basic Sapper training he joined 9 Sqn and was a founder member of the reformation of 9 Independent Airborne Sqn at Hameln in 1948 and was a prop forward in the Sqn rugby team that got into the Army Cup Final, He was a man that kept his peace and just got on with his life. I do not recall him being in the Canal Zone but he went on to serve for 22 years man and boy. Following his military service he went with his family to Australia but returned after 3 years being unable to find suitable employment.
On his return he joined the MOD police at Thatcharn and when that finished he went to work for the Americans at Greenham. That was the best job that he had ever had being tasked with sorting out their stores and they were delighted with his results.
He enjoyed 66 years of married life with Barbara but sadly was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer which was unbeatable. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
